Village Tour
1. Prehistoric city in Akrotiri (1 hour)
Visit one of the most stunning archaeological sites in the World!! The ancient Minoan city buried by the volcanic eruption 3600 years ago was discovered in 1967 nearby the modern village Akrotiri, remarkably well-preserved. Pottery, furniture, advanced drainage systems and three story buildings have been discovered at the site. Many believe the disaster and the site itself as the inspiration behind Plato’s story of Atlantis.
2. Red beach, located by the village of Akrotiri.
Beautiful beach, well known for the unique color of the sand and the hill behind it. Soaring red lava cliffs which drop right to the sandy shore and into the clear blue sea make for a majestic setting and one to enjoy. You’ll have around 30 minutes here for photos and for walking around.
3. Emboriocasteli(45 minutes)
Emborio is situated on the south side of the island. It’s a traditional inland village with a lovely traditional center. We suggest to go up to the “traditional center” (there are signs) where you will find the ruins of a fortress, a maze of very narrow streets and whitewashed houses. The traditional center looked very medieval and was great to wander about and to discover hidden gems.
4.Perissablackbeach(15minutes)
Perissa is one of Santorini best beaches. Next to Emporio village a long dark sand endless beach. A feature that makes Perissa unique (besides the crystal water and the smooth sand) is the fact that is the best protected beach from the summer Aegean winds (called “Meltemia” in Greek). Perissa lies right next to ProfitisIliasMountain, totally protected from the North. Magnificent beach for swimmimg!
5. Megalochori traditional vilage(45 minutes) with its typical traditional Cycladic houses and neoclassic buildings.
It is located between Pyrgos, Emporio and Akrotiri at a distance of less than 10 km from Fira. It is made of hundreds of small white painted houses built the one upon the other and it is characterized by its beautiful churches. It combines traditional architecture with vaulted houses and calderimia (stone-cobbled narrow pathways) and a lively community with a fairly large permanent population.
6. Pyrgoscasteli (45minutes)
Pyrgos was built on the top of a hill and was until the early 1800, the capital of the island. The village is composed of traditional houses built around the Venetian Castle and the small streets follow the shape of the hill. Climbing from the square up to the castle of Pyrgos, the stone houses crowd more densely together and the labyrinth of narrow vaulted lanes becomes more tortuous. The village has many churches, around 33, but the most famous is the Monastery of ProfitisIlias, where a small collection of ethnographic material and old icons are exhibits. Pyrgos is a place that certainly worth a visit and dedicate enough time to the most fabulous panoramic view of the island.
7. ProfitisIlias(30 minutes)
The highest spot of the island (567 meters) is located between Pyrgos and Kamari. The Mountain’s name is ProfitisIlias (Prophet Elijah), coming from the Monastery with the same name on its peak. From this vantage point, you will enjoy a striking view of the entire island, from the patchwork agricultural plains to the hilltop village of Oia.
The Monastery was built in 1712. The walls round the Monastery remind of a fortress. The history of ProfitisIlias is long and very important for the life of Santorini during the centuries. In earlier times, owned its’ own ship which conducted private business for the benefit of the monastery and at the same time the Monastery was an active intellectual and patriotic influence. From 1806 to 1845 it ran a school where the Greek language and literature were taught. The monastery’s decline began in 1860; buildings suffered serious damage in the 1956 earthquake.
8. Wine museum(and wine tasting optional) (one hour for the museum only, allow 20 minutes for wine tasting) the unique Wine Museum is located 8m underground.
Tunnels that reach the length of 300 meters long, shows the history of wine making and life in the Santorinian vineyards from 1660 to 1970. Through reconstruction using working and fixed models and a personal automatic guide available in nine languages, the visitor is lead through the history of wine making.
9. Santo wine winery.
Learn about the vinification process and aging of wines! Taste our awarded wines; explore an assortment of wines, wine accessories as well as other Santorini traditional food products.Watch the documentary film produced by Santo Wines, and learns about the history of Santorini Wine. The center is situated on the top of the caldera cliff, with a magnificent view of Santorini volcano and the Aegean Sea. This will take about 45 minutes.
10. Fira (45minutes)
A walk through Proteas with its beautiful alleys and magnificent views of the volcano is always a good stop where you can also do your shopping
11. Prehistoric museum Fira (45 minutes)
Υou will get an introduction to art and history of the island and its archaeological excavations. In the Prehistorical Museum in Fira, witnesses of old times let you have a premonition of how their former inhabitants lived. The findings tell you about agriculture, fishing, handicraft and animal husbandry, about honey and saffron, but also about a life in glamour and richness. Fragments of small clay tablets show the so-called lineal scripture A, which is a syllabary and has not yet been completely decoded and may have been used until 1500 years b.C. A collection of seal prints has been found recently but could not be allocated. There are several pieces of clay, showing prints of about fifteen different topics. Finally – a well-planned sewer system, paved streets and Akrotiri’s architectures – traces of a highly developed culture.
12. Firostafani square (15 minutes)
Between Fira and Imerovigli, one of the spots with the best view on the island. Even if officially considerate as a distinct village, Firostefani is the continuation of Fira. A quiet village, which is mostly constituted of hotels, traditional houses, villas, studios and rooms. The area proposes just a couple of restaurants and cafe but Fira, where all the activities are concentrated can be reached on foot. It is also, one of the most picturesque and peaceful neighborhood which is perched on the cliffs of the Caldera. Firostefani offers several hotels of all kind to stay, cafe to enjoy the sunset and restaurants for dinner.
13. Finika, old town (30 minutes-2hours)
If you want to learn about a place’s history, you will have to take a short trip to its past. The few residents will give you a hearty welcome! The neighborhoods with the narrow paths, the broken doors and windows will stay forever in your mind. Until the 1956 earthquake there were 3 groceries, 2 bakeries, 2 traditional coffee houses and a school in Finikia. The village had only 2500 residents. The farthest they had managed to go was to the church of TIMIOS STAVROS in Perissa with their donkeys.Finikia has many churches. Every church has its own name day. The narrow cobblestone pavements are always clean and the local artists draw their primitive arts with passion. They put palm leaves on the doors, and the whole village has a really sweet aroma!The village today has 3 wonderful restaurants where you can enjoy local dishes.
14. Sigalas or OENOP winery (30 minutes – 1 hour) both are the most famous wineries in Santorini and located in Ia. Both are in perfects spots and offers wine tasting, Sigalas winery offers also lunch or dinner.
15. Oia sunset &castle (30 minutes)
Τhe most photographed and picturesque village of Santorini. The village is called Oia and it is famous for traditional white-washed houses, blue domed chapels, spectacular views of Volcano and Caldera and an amazing sunset.
